What is PCR Testing?
PCR testing is considered the Gold Standard for Covid testing. Screening with rapid tests such as antibody tests, is the quickest and most economical way to assess who might be infected, or who may have been infected and subsequently recovered. However, when definitive results are needed to confirm a diagnosis, PCR testing is necessary.
The COVID-19 RT-PCR test is a real-time, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid (RNA) from SARS-CoV-2 in upper or lower respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, sputum, lower respiratory tract aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage, and nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate) collected from individuals suspected of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider (HCP), or collected from any individual, including those without symptoms or other reasons to suspect COVID-19 infection.
The downside of PCR testing is the time it takes to get results. After samples are collected, it takes time to ship them to a lab. Then, the equipment used to process PCR tests takes up to 2 hours to process the tests. However, the real source of the delays is the backlogs in the large commercial labs, sometime as long as 2 weeks, making the results all but worthless. Between the time someone is tested and the time they get results, unless they self-quarantine, they can potentially become a silent spreader and infect a large number of people.
That’s where we come in. We have partnered with regional CLIA certified labs to cut the turnaround time down to under 48 hours (24 hours for an additional fee) without sacrificing quality or accuracy.
We offer both nasal and oral swab options and you can select either 24- or 48-hour turnaround for results.
Why It's Done
In the U.S., your doctor may recommend a COVID-19 diagnostic test if:
You have COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, tiredness or shortness of breath
You've had close contact with someone who tests positive for the COVID-19 virus or is suspected of having the virus
You're at high risk of complications if you become infected
Certain groups are considered high priority for diagnostic testing. These include people with COVID-19 signs and symptoms who:
Work in a health care facility or as first responders
Live or work in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes, or other places where people are housed closely together, such as prisons or shelters
Are being cared for in a hospital
